Frequently asked questions

General questions

At Palmy Physiotherapy, we believe in transparent communication and ensuring you have all the information you need. Below are answers to some of the most common questions our patients ask, helping you understand our approach to your health and recovery.

Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist?

No. You can book an appointment directly with Palmy Physiotherapy without a GP referral. If you have an ACC-related injury, we can assist with the ACC process during your appointment.

Can I see you for an ACC injury?

Yes. Palmy Physiotherapy provides physiotherapy care for ACC-related injuries. We can help with assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and getting you safely back to your normal activities. Please bring your ACC claim details if you already have a claim.

What happens during my first physiotherapy appointment?

Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment of your injury, pain, movement, strength, and functional goals. We will explain what may be contributing to your symptoms and develop a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan with you. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, exercises, education, and advice to help you manage your condition.

Is there anything important I should do or bring for my first appointment?

To help us make the most of your first appointment, please consider the following:

What to bring

  • ACC claim number or injury details, if your appointment is related to an ACC injury.
  • Any relevant medical reports, scan or imaging results, referral letters, or specialist information.
  • A list of your current medications, if applicable.
  • Any relevant information about previous treatment or surgery.

What to wear

Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed or treated. For example, shorts may be helpful for a knee or leg assessment, while a singlet or loose top can be useful for a shoulder or upper-body assessment.

What to expect

Your first appointment will usually include an assessment of your symptoms, movement, strength, and functional activities. We will discuss your goals and work with you to develop an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Do I need to be in pain before I see a physiotherapist?

Not necessarily. Physiotherapy can help with pain, but it can also support recovery, improve movement and strength, prevent problems from getting worse, and help you return to the activities you enjoy. You don't have to wait until your symptoms become severe before seeking help.
